Styling Your Culottes

I was road testing my culottes at the weekend, you know those superwide trousers that stop waaaay above your ankle, I wore them out to lunch with friends. I won’t lie, when I heard they were back in stores I broke out into a sweat because you see, culottes have been around the fashion block with me a few times. I was the proud owner of a very colourful pair that I happily accessorised with a perm in the late 80’s. Thankfully this year’s incarnation is a much more stylish and versatile affair.  IMG_0335

Mine are from Next, Alex from The Frugality has written about Next and culottes on a few occasions so I thought I’d take a closer look. They are a snip at £22 which I think is an ok amount of money to spend to experiment with a trouser fit beyond the ‘skinny’. They do take some getting used to as the shape is so jarring for those of us who have rarely been seen out of skinny jeans in the last 10 years but they look good and interesting ladies!

Overall, I think the vibe is pretty casual although it totally depends on what you wear them with (versatile you see). I wore mine with these cute silver block heeled sandals from H&M but I love them worn with a simple sweater -neutrals and Breton work well here- and a pair of white Adidas style trainers.

They also translate well into work wear worn with shirts (untucked please) and some lovely statement shoes like these babies from Boden. Have a look at my Pinterest board if you still need convincing.

Finally, a word to the wise: in my quest for culottes I found that the length can vary wildly so be sure to shop around and find the most flattering length for your size before committing to buy.

Let me know how you get on with your culottes, I’d love to hear from you.

I applaud your bravery at resurrecting one of my fashion frighteners, and I commend your success in styling them perfectly! #gorgeous
My childbearing hips and thunder thighs have rendered me ‘culottes-trophoic’ since the 90’s but having read this, I’m now thinking…do I dare? These aren’t the mustard coloured monstrosities of my youth after all
